FAQ

FAQs Immersive 4 Week Training

The Pilates industry commonly distinguishes between two broad approaches: Classical and Contemporary. This program prepares students to understand and teach principles from both, allowing graduates to develop into versatile instructors capable of working in a variety of professional settings.

Beyond learning exercises and technique, the training places strong emphasis on developing effective teaching skills. Students learn how to observe movement, communicate clearly, and adapt instruction to meet the individual needs of different clients.

A key focus of the program is the development of neuromuscular coordination and the mind-body connection required for efficient movement. Students explore how the nervous system influences movement quality and how this understanding supports more effective teaching.

The program also provides guidance on entering the Pilates profession, including practical insights into building experience, teaching confidently, and growing a sustainable career.

The curriculum in the 4 Week program aligns with professional competency standards assessed by the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP). This ensures that graduates develop the knowledge, skills, and teaching proficiency expected of professional Pilates instructors.

Private and commercial programs:

Pilates teacher training programs are typically offered in two formats: private (independent) programs and larger commercial programs.

Private training programs are usually developed and taught by experienced instructors or studios and often provide a more personalised, immersive learning environment.

Commercial training programs are developed by larger organisations and are delivered across multiple locations by different course instructors.

Both types of programs can prepare students for successful teaching careers. The most important factors to consider when choosing a training are the curriculum quality, total training hours, instructor experience, and alignment with industry competency standards.

Sunset Pilates Bali offers an independent professional teacher training program. Graduates receive a comprehensive course certificate upon successful completion of all program requirements.

Is the 4 Week course internationally recognized?:

Pilates teacher training is not regulated by a single international governing body. Training programs issue their own course certificates upon completion.

This program provides a comprehensive 518-hour professional teacher training certificate in Mat and Reformer Pilates instruction. Graduates are prepared to teach professionally in a variety of studio environments.

For those who wish to obtain an additional third-party credential, graduates may pursue certification through the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP), which is widely recognized within the Pilates industry.

As with most professions in the movement field, recognition is based on training quality, instructor competency, and professional reputation rather than government licensing or global accreditation systems.

What is the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP)?:

The National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP) is an independent third-party organization that provides professional certification for comprehensively trained Pilates instructors. It is based in the United States and is recognized within the global Pilates industry as the leading standard for competency credentials.

NPCP certification is earned by passing a comprehensive written examination designed to evaluate an instructor’s knowledge of anatomy, movement science, Pilates methodology, program design, and professional practice.

The NPCP was originally developed by the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) in 2005 to establish a consistent third-party certification standard for Pilates teachers. It now operates as an independent certification body.

Is NPCP certification required to teach?:

No. Pilates instruction is not regulated internationally, and most instructors begin teaching after completing a professional teacher training program.

A training program provides education and awards a course certificate upon successful completion. Third-party certification through the NPCP is optional and represents an additional professional credential that some instructors choose to pursue.

What is the difference between a training certificate and NPCP certification?

A training program certificate documents successful completion of a professional education program. Training programs provide education and practical teaching preparation

NPCP certification is a separate credential earned by passing an independent competency examination. NPCP certification provides third-party professional validation

Eligibility requirements for the NPCP exam:

Eligibility requirements and additional information RE the NPCP program can be found here.

Eligibility is based on meeting the NPCP’s published training hour requirements, not on whether a program is private or commercial.

Candidates must demonstrate sufficient training, teaching experience, and knowledge before sitting for the examination.

Prep materials for the NPCP exam can be found here.

The curriculum in the 4 Week program aligns with professional competency standards assessed by the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP). This ensures that graduates develop the knowledge, skills, and teaching proficiency expected of professional Pilates instructors.

Is PMA membership the same as certification?:

No. Membership in the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) is a professional association affiliation and does not provide instructor certification.

Certification is only granted through the NPCP examination process.

Final Exam

Students will be ready for the final exam AFTER they have completed all of the required practical hours. Test out date/time will be decided by the student and Master Instructor Saria. The final exam can be completed in-person or via Zoom.

The final examination assesses competency in applied anatomy, repertoire knowledge, program design, cueing, safety, and professional conduct.

ALL of the topics covered during the course are fair game for the final exam. Applied theoretical knowledge is assessed verbally through scenario-based questioning during the examination.

Students must demonstrate safe, competent, and professional performance in both exam components.

If competency is not demonstrated, students may retake the examination after additional preparation. Students will be required to pay the final exam fee again.

Assessment decisions are based on professional competency standards established by the NPCP.

The exam has two main parts:

Teaching Proficiency Exam: Teach a 50 min session to a client or small group. Students must demonstrate the ability to apply program structure and repertoire. This portion of the exam can be taken online via Zoom, in-person, or it can be pre-recorded and sent to the Master Instructor for assessment.

Evaluation criteria include:

  • Clear and accurate exercise instruction
  • Appropriate use of verbal and demonstration cueing
  • Safe exercise selection and progression
  • Ability to modify exercises based on client needs
  • Professional communication and teaching presence
  • Logical class structure and flow

Movement Proficiency Exam: Demonstrate selected exercises from the Pilates repertoire. Exercises will be randomly chosen. Appropriate modifications are encouraged. Students will be expected to verbally cue as they perform the movement. If asked, they will also be required to explain how to approach teaching the exercise in specific scenarios.

Evaluation criteria include:

  • Correct execution of exercise technique
  • Appropriate body control and coordination
  • Ability to demonstrate modifications when needed
  • Accurate verbal cueing while performing movements
