Is Pilates for you?
Pilates…not just for women and dancers. I was talking to a client the other day who, after praising the Pilates method and professing her love for it, confessed that she originally thought Pilates was not meant for her. She believed that only tall, willowy, dancer-type women did Pilates. We agreed that many people have the same perception. Ugh. Who is Pilates for? Pilates is for everyone and everyBODY. The method aims to improve strength in a balanced way and includes stretching and lengthening what is tight. Its main emphasis is on spinal health and core stability. Everyone needs that! I have worked with every type: golfers improving their swing, mothers returning to fitness, miners healing their sore backs, surfers improving their core, elderly women seeking a pain-free movement experience, kick-boxers wanting to do the splits… and yes, some dancers too. Pilates transforms us. I would like to encourage and inspire anyone and everyone to explore the possibility that Pilates is a lifestyle choice for health, fitness, and self-awareness…not just doing exercises.
