Romana Kryzanowska

Romana Kryzanowska (1923–2013) was one of the most influential figures in the history of Pilates and the closest protégé of Joseph Pilates. She dedicated her life to preserving and teaching the original Pilates method—also known as Contrology—exactly as it was created.

As a young ballet dancer at the School of American Ballet, Romana suffered an ankle injury that threatened her career. Under the guidance of renowned choreographer George Balanchine, she was introduced to Joseph Pilates for rehabilitation. Within just a few weeks, she made a full recovery.

That experience changed her life.
